Vaccines are an important part of your dog’s health. Although vaccine reactions are not common, they can happen and can range from mild to severe.
Mild vaccine reactions include:
1. Lethargy
You may notice decreased appetite and energy for 24-48 hours after vaccine administration.
2. Sneezing/coughing
The Bordetella, or kennel cough vaccine, is administered intranasally (in the nose) or orally (in the mouth). This can cause some irritation in the nose or mouth.
3. Injection site irritation
Your dog may be tender over the injection site. You may also notice mild swelling. If any lumps appear at the injection site and do not go away or become large/painful, contact your veterinarian.
Severe vaccine reactions include:
Hives
Facial swelling
Trouble breathing
Vomiting/diarrhea
If your dog displays any severe vaccine reactions, contact your veterinarian immediately.
If your dog has previously had a vaccine reaction, there are a few ways we can help to reduce the chance of vaccine reactions in the future. Your veterinarian may recommend splitting up vaccines. We might also recommend administering antihistamines prior to administering vaccines. Antihistamines can either be administered orally at home by you or as an injection given by your veterinarian. If you choose to administer antihistamines at home, contact your veterinarian to receive a dose.
